MILFORD, Conn. --- Sophomore Jake Plattner (Millersville, Md./Severna Park HS) scored at 15:16 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and give Bentley College a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart University in Atlantic Hockey action Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Plattner, playing in just his third game of the year, netted his second goal of the season when he found himself in position for a rebound off of teammate Paul Markarian's (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy HS) shot from the point. The big forward was able to control the puck and put it in the net for the game-winner.
The visiting Falcons, who are unbeaten in their last four games, jumped to an early 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the first period, when freshman John Hooks (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton Townships HS) received a pass from teammate Bryan Goodwin (Dover, N.H./Exeter HS) at the blue line and put a shot on the Pioneer net that skipped through the legs of goalie Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, Que.).
Bentley improved its cushion late in the first stanza on sophomore Brett Murphy's (Caledonia, Mich./Kentwood HS) third tally of the season. The second-year defensemen collected a pass from teammate Carmen Posteraro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic HS) and roofed the shot from the slot.
Neither team got the offense going in the second period, but Sacred Heart used two goals 53 seconds apart to tie the game at 2-2 with just over seven minutes to play in the third period. The first tally came on a 5-3 advantage for SHU. Sophomore Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, Mich.) corralled a rebound in front of Bentley goalie Simon St. Pierre (Montreal, Que./College Bourget) and knocked home the goal.
The Pioneers second goal of the night came on a slap shot from senior Konn Hawkes (Watrous, Sask.) (who assisted on the first score) that beat St. Pierre over his right shoulder.
St. Pierre had a solid day for the Falcons, making 26 saves, including a pair of dandies in the second period. LaPointe had 23 saves for the Pioneers. Bentley earned its first conference win of the season and improved to 1-4-4 in conference play and 3-9-4 overall. Sacred Heart fell to 4-10-2 overall and 4-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
