St. Lawrence Erupts Late to Stop Mercyhurst 5-2

(Canton, NY) The St. Lawrence junior forward Stace Page’s second goal of the season, midway in the third period, snapped a 2-2 tie and the Saints went on from there to down Mercyhurst 5-2 Saturday night, December 13, in an independent Division I men’s hockey game in Canton, NY. The win improved St. Lawrence’s overall record to 6-10-3 while the Lakers slipped to 6-6-1. It was the first ever meeting between the two teams.

St. Lawerence freshman defenseman Drew Bagnall scored the lone goal of the first period, a power play tally at 4:13.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead at 7:39 of the second when sophomore forward T.J. Trevelyan scored his eleventh of the season as the teams played four-on-four. The Lakers got back in the game as the second period buzzer sounded when junior forward David Wrigley scored his fifth of the season on a power play. The rejuvenated Lakers then tied the game early in the third when senior forward Peter Rynshoven scored an even strength goal at 3:28. The teams remained deadlocked for the next seven minutes until Page scored. Sophomore forward Jon Zeiler gave the Saints a 4-2 lead at 17:11 and freshman forward Kyle Rank scored into an empty net at 19:25.

St. Lawrence outshot Mercyhurst 46-24. The Lakers were 1 of 4 with the man advantage and were penalized six times for twelve minutes. The Saints finished 1 of 6 and were assessed four minor penalties in the game.

Mercyhurst freshman goaltender Jordan Wakefield, who relieved starter Andy Franck late in the first period, took the loss. St. Lawrence junior goalie Kevin Ackley got the win.

Mercyhurst will break for Christmas before tangling with RPI on Sunday, December 28, in Troy, NY
