Mercyhurst Scores Five in the Second to Defeat Western Michigan

(Kalamazoo, MI)Mercyhurst scored five second period goals to erase a 2-1 deficit and went on from there to defeat Western Michigan 7-4 Saturday night, November 22, before 2414 fans at the Lawson Arena. The win gave the Lakers a split in the weekend series, snapped a three-game losing streak, and improved their overall record to 5-4-0. The Broncos fell to 5-7-2.

reshman Kyle Gourgon had Mercyhurst’s lone goal in the first period, a power play tally at 6:09, which tied the game at 1-1. WMU scored a power play goal of its own with just seven seconds left in the period to take a 2-1 lead at intermission.

Mercyhurst sophomore forward Erik Johnson tied the game just nine seconds into the middle period and sophomore forward Scott Reynolds (pp) and senior forward Adam Tackaberry scored their fifth goals of the season moments later to put Mercyhurst ahead to stay. Both teams scored two more goals in the middle stanza with the Mercyhurst tallies coming from freshman Jim Gehring, a power play and first career, and senior Mike Carter, also a power play with under a minute left.

Gehring had the third period’s lone goal, an even strength tally at 15:10.

The win evened Mercyhurst’s record this season against CCHA teams at 2-2 and squared the start of an eleven-game road trip at 1-1.

All told, Mercyhurst was outshot 41-24 but cashed four of five power play chances. Junior forward David Wrigley was awarded the game’s first star after a three assist performance. Sophomore Andy Franck picked up the win in goal.

Mercyhurst will rest until Saturday, November 29, when it travels to Cornell for an independent game.
