BENTLEY EDGES AIC 2-1
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 10, 2005) – Anthony Canzoneri’s (Homer
Glen, Ill.) goal 18 seconds into the third period proved to be the
gamewinner as Bentley College posted a 2-1 win over American International
College in a Atlantic Hockey contest at the Olympia Ice Center Saturday
night. The Falcons improve to 6-7-2 and 4-3-2 in the league, while the
Yellow Jackets are now 1-10-2 and 1-7-2 in AHA play.
Tied 1-1 after a scoreless second period, Bentley controlled the opening
faceoff, and an initial shot attempt by Marc Zwicky (Basel, Switzerland)
was stopped by AIC netminder Tom Fenton (Sarnia, Ontario), but Canzoneri
poked home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Tom Dickhudt
(Woodbury, Minn.) also assisted on the goal.
Bentley got on the board 8:46 into the game on a short-handed tally. Jeff
Gumaer (Webster Groves, Minn.) collected a loose puck in the faceoff circle
to the right of Fenton and fired a shot that glanced off the tip of
Fenton’s glove into the goal. The Yellow Jackets responded with a power
play goal at 16:23 of the first. Just four seconds into the penalty, Chris
Cote (Oxford, Mass.) notched his first career goal when he took a pass from
Mark Pavli (Sarnia, Ontario), who took the draw from Jeff Valdes (Falmouth,
Mass.).
Bentley goalie Ray Jean (Randolph, Maine) made 28 saves en route to the
win as AIC outshot Bentley 29-24. Fenton, this week’s Atlantic Hockey
Rookie of the Week, made 22 saves for the hosts.
AIC is idle until January 6 when it hosts Canisius for the first game of a
two-game home set with the Golden Griffins.
