Hockey Loses
5-1 to Holy Cross
Dawe extends
point streak to six games in loss.
Holy Cross used its power play for the second straight night to break open the game as Canisius lost 5-1 to the Crusaders Saturday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
The Griffs (5-8-1, 3-6-1 Atlantic Hockey) scored first, at 2:55 into the game, as senior captain Fred Coccimiglio (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) battled along the boards and got the puck to senior forward Andrew Dawe (Kitchener, Ont.). Dawe slammed home the puck on the stick side of Holy Cross goalie Ben Conway to give the Griffs the early 1-0 lead with a power play goal. The goal extended Dawe’s goal streak to three games and his point streak to six games.
Then the Holy Cross special teams responded as the Crusaders (9-3-1, 7-2-1) tied the game at 1-1 when Holy Cross forward Tyler McGregor banged home the loose puck off a shot by Pierre Frenette-Hapert to score a power play goal. The Crusaders took a 2-1 lead at the 14:12 mark of the first period when Jon Landry fired a shot at Canisius goalie Max Buetow (Denver, Colo.) who couldn’t control the rebound. Landry gathered the loose puck and fired it past Buetow’s glove. Three minutes later, McGregor got his second goal of the night when Frenette-Hapert fired another shot into Buetow and McGregor sent home the loose rebound to make the score 3-1 and give Holy Cross its second power play goal on the night.
The Crusaders made the score 4-1 at 7:36 of the second period when Matt Burke set up the goal by hitting Dale Reinhardt with a long pass. Reinhardt drove over the blue line on the left side and slid a pass across the ice to Sean Nappo who sent it home. Reinhardt got his own goal at the 13:45 mark on assists from James Sixsmith and Rob Godfrey.
Conway (3-1-0) made 24 saves to get the win while Buetow (1-4-1) took the loss and stopped 10 shots.
The Griffs return to the ice next weekend for a home-and-home series with Mercyhurst. Friday night’s game is in Erie, Pa. while Saturday night’s game is back at Buffalo State, when faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
