Mercyhurst Rebounds to Trip Michigan Tech, 5-2

Houghton, Mich. - Freshman goaltender Tyler Small made 41 saves in his first collegiate start as Mercyhurst avenged a one-goal loss Friday by defeating Michigan Tech 5-2 before more than 2300 fans Saturday night. Both teams concluded the weekend set with 1-1 marks.

As it did Friday, Mercyhurst scored first and led 2-1 after a period thanks to goals from sophomore Jon Asselstine and junior defenseman Jamie Hunt, his second in as many games. But, unlike Friday, Mercyhurst never relinquished the lead.

Senior forward Dave Borrelli expaned the Hurst's lead to 3-1 in the middle period, the eventual game-winning goal coming at 7:13. Although Tech closed the gap to one with a shorthanded marker in the last minute of the middle period, Small and the Lakers withstood the momentum shift and played a solid third period.

Freshman forward Chris Trafford gave Mercyhurst some breathing room with his first collegiate goal at 4:56 of the third and junior forward Scott Champagne put the icing on the cake and strecthed his scoring streak to 21 games with the game's only power play tally at 16:34.

Small stopped 13 of 14 Huskies' shots in the first, 17 of 18 in the second, and all eleven Tech attempts in the third. Michigan Tech goalie Rob Nolan took the loss in his first start of the season.

Borrelli led the point parade with three as the Lakers won their first non-conference game since defeating Robert Morris last season. tech outshot Mercyhurst 43 to 34, but failed on six power play chances and was held to just 1 of 13 in the two games.

Mercyhurst will rest until Friday, October 14, when in entertains Brock in a 7:00pm exhibition match at the Ice Center.
