Erie, PA - Mercyhurst snapped its three-game winless streak in a big way Tuesday, October 26, with an 8-2 pounding of Robert Morris before nearly 800 fans at the Ice Center. The Lakers are now 1-3 on the young season while the Colonials, in their first year of varsity hockey, are 1-2. The meeting was the first-ever between the two teams.

Mercyhurst took a 2-1 lead after a period thanks to a power play goal from team captain Scott Reynolds (Kerrobert, Saskatchewan) and an even strength tally by freshman forward Matt Warren (Gatineau, Quebec). Both were first goals of the season. RMU countered late in the period on a power play goal from freshman forward Jace Buzek (Greensburg, PA), yet another first goal of the season. The Lakers had a slight 14-13 advantage in shots.

Mercyhurst broke the game open with a four-spot in the second. Senior forward David Wrigley (Washago, Ontario) banged home his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner on a power play goal at 2:05 and junior forward Dave Borrelli Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) scored shorthanded about three minutes later to make it 4-1. It was Borrelli’s fourth goal of the season and all on special teams - two power play and two shorthanded. Junior defenseman Conrad Martin (Toronto, Ontario) made it 5-1 with his first of the season at 12:06 and Wrigley’s late power play goal put the Lakers ahead 6-1 after forty minutes. Mercyhurst enjoyed a sizeable 16-5 advantage in shots.

The third period proved a formality as Warren scored his second of the game at 9:18 and freshman defenseman Jamie Coghlan (Toronto, Ontario) added his first career goal on a power play at 19:51. Sandwiched between the two was an even strength tally by RMU freshman forward Doug Conley, his first of the young season at 13:55.

Mercyhurst outshot RMU 39-27 in the game, which featured 32 minor penalties, sixteen a side.

Mercyhurst head coach Rick Gotkin picked up the 299th win his 16+-year career, all at Mercyhurst. Meanwhile, senior forward Rich Hansen collected three assists and went over the 100-point plateau in his three-plus years. He now has 101. Wrigley’s two goals, meanwhile, give him 99 career points.

Mercyhurst will be back on the road Friday when it begins a ten-game road trip at Union. The Lakers won’t return home until Friday, December 10, when they entertain Atlantic Hockey rival Canisius at 7:30.
